The Skin's pH

The Importance of the Skin's pH

The pores of our skin are made up of a combination of oil and sweat glands (sebaceous and sudoriferous glands) helping to keep our skin healthy and elastic. Making sure the skin's pH is in a healthy range will ensure the health of our skin even more.

The Acid Mantle

This slightly acidic layer, the "acid mantle", is our body's first defense mechanism against invading bacteria.  This defense layer develops at puberty when we start to produce more hair on our bodies and activate the sebaceous oil glands at the same time. This is what changes our skin pH to somewhere between 4.5 and 6.2, which is the normal pH range for the skin. Children are more susceptible to disease, viruses and fungal infections such as ringworm because the pH of children’s skin is closer to the neutral pH of 7.

In the late teens to early twenties, our acid mantle is well developed and provides good protection against potentially harmful, external environmental factors. Consequently, our skin usually looks healthy, heals quickly when injured and seems to take care of itself.

Botox Can Inhibit our Ability to Communicate Properly

There’s a growing body of research out there showing that our facial expressions reflect our emotional ups and downs – that they appear to send crucial feedback to our brain. Without that full feedback loop, our ability to understand — and be understood — might be inhibited.

What Researchers Found

Researchers [1] studying women undergoing Botox treatment found that the treatment of Botox which essentially paralyzes the muscles, seem to slow a person's ability to comprehend emotional language. That is, we need to perform the physical emotion through our facial muscles to convey to our brain the correct interpretation of what is being felt and said.  This compliments earlier research showing that mimicking emotional expression triggers a matching emotional response. [2]

What is this Research and What does it Prove?

Such findings have raised the question of whether emotional expression is itself necessary for fluid processing of emotional language. In the new study researchers investigated whether temporarily paralyzing the corrugator muscle (that muscle that spreads above the nose and across the brow, responsible for the parallel, vertical furrows one sees there) blocked people's ability to process negative emotional language as it prevented one from frowning.

Sunscreen

Why doesn't CFFormulas™ offer a sunscreen in their skin care line?

I'm asked from time to time about sunscreens. We have been working to develop a great sunscreen lotion or even a spray, which I would prefer, but it's not so easy.  For one thing, even though I've researched the subject a lot, to have our product tested for the SPF factor is very costly. Alas, we are a small company and quite frankly can't afford the price tag asked for by the government to claim we have a great sunscreen with a high SPF factor. However, we have formulated a sunscreen lotion with all the "right" ingredients and it seems to be working well in our trials.

How does sunscreen work and why is it so important to use it?

Fresh –packed Vitamin C Gives you Gorgeous Skin in 7 Days

Did you know that L-Ascorbic Acid is the only form of Vitamin C that can be utilized directly by the skin?  When applied topically, directly onto the skin, it can offer concentrations 200 times or more within skin tissues than when you internally take Vitamin C. In fact, in more than one-thousand clinical studies, L-Ascorbic Acid has shown both short and long-term benefits to the skin! L-Ascorbic Acid is the choice to use as other forms of Vitamin C are far less functional in getting into the skin and creating these benefits.

One of the biggest problems with Vitamin C is that it oxidizes easily.  You can see this as products with high concentrations of Vitamin C can turn orange over time. When this happens, the product actually becomes a "pro-oxidant" instead of an antioxidant and can possibly further cause oxidation of the skin. Not what we want! This is why Carolyn’s Facial Formulas Crystal Serum C uses fresh, powdered L-Ascorbic Acid to be added to the super-antioxidant serum base upon use. This way you are assured that you are getting all the benefits that Vitamin C can afford your skin.  That is the freshest and therefore most potent way to utilize topical Vitamin C.

And, what are those benefits of using fresh, topical L-Ascorbic Acid in a super-packed antioxidant serum?
