Why Woman Wrinkle Around the Mouth More Than Men

Have you ever taken a close look at the wrinkles around the mouth of women compared to men?  Well, I have and that got me wondering why it seems women are more prone to wrinkles around the mouth than men. Well, Dermatologists in the Netherlands report (study was published in the November/December 2009 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal) that women have fewer oil producing sebaceous glands around the upper lip than men.  Less oil in this area means that the skin stays more supple in men as we age. On top of that, women also have fewer blood vessels in the upper lip area which means there is less blood flow and this is particularly true of postmenopausal women.  As well, the muscles around the mouth in women are closer to the skin than they are in men, meaning the skin can be pulled tighter there which can lead to more wrinkles.

Resting your middle and index fingertips from both hands lightly on the outside middle of your top lip, thumbs rest together just under the point of your chin, curl your lip up over your top teeth while sliding your fingers down towards the corner of your mouth, counting to 5.
